Rapporter un conseil

Module 9 of the free French course (CEFR B2, completed), lesson 14 of 30: Orders and advice keep the de plus infinitive shape you met in Module 2. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's lesson 14.

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

Orders and advice keep the de plus infinitive shape you met in Module 2, and the reporting verb does the tense work: il m'a conseillé de partir tôt.

Et aussi · And also

Choose the verb for the force of it: conseiller (advise), demander (ask), ordonner (order), supplier (beg), interdire (forbid). Il m'a supplié de rester says more than il m'a demandé de rester.

Attention · Watch out

Advice and orders keep de + infinitive whatever the reporting verb: il m'a conseillé de partir, il m'a supplié de rester. Never il m'a conseillé que je parte.

dire, conditionnel passé — the table

je aurais dit · tu aurais dit · il/elle aurait dit · nous aurions dit · vous auriez dit · ils/elles auraient dit

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with il m'a conseillé de partir.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out dire, conditionnel passé in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
