The self-portrait — your first French paragraph

The course finale: six sentences you can say and write about yourself — name, age, family, a like, a dislike and what you speak. Every line comes from an earlier lesson; stitched together they make your first French paragraph, the exact exit ticket the Module 1 workbook ends on.

The words

FrenchEnglishSay it
Je m’appelle…My name is…zhuh mah-PELL

Il y a … dans ma famille.There are … in my family.eel ee ah … dah(n) mah fah-MEE

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

Assemble it

Write the six sentences in order, with your own details. Read the paragraph aloud twice. That text — written by your hand, true of you — is worth more than any page you only read, which is the entire philosophy of this course and its workbook.

Where next

Module 2 finishes A1: numbers to 100, dates, food, weather, telling time, full questions and the complete verb paradigms. Until then, the two study tools below keep this module’s 280 words alive with spaced repetition.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Write your six-sentence self-portrait, accents and apostrophes intact.
  2. Read it aloud to someone — or record yourself and listen back.
  3. Turn your portrait sentences into flashcards and schedule your reviews.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.

Keep these words

Turn this lesson’s words into flashcards, then space your reviews — the two habits the research behind our study guides backs hardest.
