La regla · The rule

The formal letter has five fixed parts and they never move: the address block, the asunto (subject line), the greeting with its colon, the body, the closing formula. Learn the skeleton and you only ever write the body.

Y también · And also

Asunto: solicitud de reembolso. Estimados señores: Me dirijo a ustedes para… The greeting is repeated in spirit inside the closing formula — reciba un cordial saludo answers estimado señor — which is the detail English speakers forget. Yo recibo muchas cartas: recibir, regular in every form.

Ojo · Watch out

el asunto is the subject line and it is a noun phrase, not a sentence: Asunto: solicitud de reembolso. The greeting ends in a colon, and the closing formula answers it.

recibir, presente — the table

yo recibo · tú recibes · él/ella/usted recibe · nosotros recibimos · ustedes reciben · ellos/ellas reciben

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el asunto.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out recibir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
