La regla · The rule

Six connectors will carry almost any B2 essay: en primer lugar, en efecto, sin embargo, en cambio, por lo tanto, en definitiva. Use each one once.

Y también · And also

The mistake to avoid is the connector that connects nothing: además at the start of a sentence that adds nothing new. A reader notices immediately, and so does an examiner. Yo digo lo que pienso — I say what I think — is the plainest sentence in the unit, and it needs no connector at all.

Ojo · Watch out

Use each connector once. además must add something new; en cambio marks a contrast; en definitiva closes. A connector that connects nothing is noticed at once.

decir, presente — the table

yo digo · tú dices · él/ella/usted dice · nosotros decimos · ustedes dicen · ellos/ellas dicen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with en primer lugar.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out decir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
