La regla · The rule

An argument without an example is an opinion. Three openers do the work: por ejemplo, tomemos el caso de, pienso especialmente en.

Y también · And also

The example should be specific enough to be checkable. Los jóvenes leen menos is an assertion; un estudio de 2023 muestra que… is an argument, even if you only half-remember the study. Yo tomo un ejemplo — I take an example — is the move itself, named.

Ojo · Watch out

por ejemplo, tomemos el caso de, pienso especialmente en: an example should be specific enough to check. Los jóvenes leen menos is an assertion, not an argument.

tomar, presente — the table

yo tomo · tú tomas · él/ella/usted toma · nosotros tomamos · ustedes toman · ellos/ellas toman

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with tomemos el caso de.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out tomar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
