La regla · The rule

C1 reading is not harder sentences so much as LONGER texts, and the skill is stamina plus selection. Read the first and last paragraph first; they usually carry the argument.

Y también · And also

Then skim for the connectors — sin embargo, en cambio, por lo tanto — because they mark where the argument turns. A page of Spanish read for its joints is worth three read word by word. Yo leía novelas largas — leer in the imperfecto, the habit that builds the stamina.

Ojo · Watch out

Read the first and last paragraphs first, then skim for sin embargo, en cambio, por lo tanto: they mark where the argument turns. Word-for-word reading is the slow way. hojear is to skim; ojear is to glance.

leer, imperfecto — the table

yo leía · tú leías · él/ella/usted leía · nosotros leíamos · ustedes leían · ellos/ellas leían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el texto largo.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out leer, imperfecto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
