La regla · The rule

Open an older Spanish novel and you meet two tenses nobody speaks. The pretérito anterior — hubo terminado, "he had finished" the instant before — and the futuro de subjuntivo — sea lo que fuere, "be that as it may". Your job with them is READING, not writing.

Y también · And also

Recognize the shapes and move on: hubo + participle after apenas or en cuanto; the -re ending (fuere, hubiere) in proverbs and legal texts. Two pronouns join them on the reading list: vosotros, the plural you of Spain, and vos, the you of Argentina and much of Central America.

Ojo · Watch out

The pretérito anterior and the futuro de subjuntivo are for READING, never for writing at this level: hubo terminado, sea lo que fuere. And vos and vosotros are recognized here, not drilled — this ladder uses tú and ustedes.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el pretérito anterior.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write two sentences of your own that get the watch-out line right, then the two practice pages of workbook lesson 28 in Module 10 are the written half of this page.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
