La regla · The rule

Level one of hypothesis is the thing that might genuinely happen. Si + presente, then the futuro simple: si vienes, iremos al cine.

Y también · And also

The present can also follow it for a general truth (si calientas el agua, hierve) or an imperative (si tienes hambre, sírvete). What never follows si is a futuro or a condicional — that rule holds at every level. Iremos: ir in the futuro, the plan that depends on the si.

Ojo · Watch out

si + presente never takes the futuro inside the si-clause: si vienes, iremos. The futuro belongs to the other half. Never si vendrás.

ir, futuro — the table

yo iré · tú irás · él/ella/usted irá · nosotros iremos · ustedes irán · ellos/ellas irán

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with si vienes, iremos al cine.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out ir, futuro in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
