La regla · The rule

Level two is the thing that is unlikely, or simply imagined. Si + imperfecto de subjuntivo, then the condicional: si tuviera la opción, viviría en el campo.

Y también · And also

Spanish uses it constantly for suggestions too: ¿y si fuéramos al restaurante? — what if we went out to eat? A past subjunctive with a question mark and no main clause at all. Ellos vendrían con nosotros — they would come with us: the condicional, waiting for its si.

Ojo · Watch out

¿y si fuéramos al restaurante? is a suggestion: y si + imperfecto de subjuntivo with a question mark and no main clause. It is not a past "if we went".

venir, condicional — the table

yo vendría · tú vendrías · él/ella/usted vendría · nosotros vendríamos · ustedes vendrían · ellos/ellas vendrían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with si tuviera la opción.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out venir, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
