Otras maneras de poner una condición

Module 10 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1 + B2 mastery, and the C1 bridge), lesson 9 of 30: Si is not the only door. On this page: 10 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

La regla · The rule

Si is not the only door. Con tal de que takes the subjunctive (voy con tal de que estés allí). En caso de que takes the subjunctive too (lleva paraguas en caso de que llueva). A menos que — unless — takes it as well.

Y también · And also

De lo contrario means otherwise and is the fastest condition in the language: apúrate; de lo contrario, perderemos el principio. Notice how Spanish gives the subjunctive to every condition word except si itself — si is the one that keeps the indicative at level one.

Ojo · Watch out

con tal de que, en caso de que and a menos que ALL take the subjunctive. Only si itself takes the indicative at level one: si llueve. Never en caso de que llueve.

estar, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo esté · tú estés · él/ella/usted esté · nosotros estemos · ustedes estén · ellos/ellas estén

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with con tal de que.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out estar, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
