La regla · The rule

The most useful hypothetical in daily life is advice, and Spanish has a ready-made opener: yo en tu lugar, rechazaría la oferta — if I were you, I would turn down the offer. No si at all, and the condicional does the work.

Y también · And also

Its formal twin is yo en su lugar. And si yo fuera tú is the literal version, correct but heavier. Most speakers reach for yo en tu lugar first. Yo haría lo mismo — I would do the same — is the shortest advice there is.

Ojo · Watch out

yo en tu lugar, rechazaría has no si and no imperfecto de subjuntivo — the condicional stands alone. Its formal twin is yo en su lugar.

rechazar, condicional — the table

yo rechazaría · tú rechazarías · él/ella/usted rechazaría · nosotros rechazaríamos · ustedes rechazarían · ellos/ellas rechazarían

hacer, condicional — the table

yo haría · tú harías · él/ella/usted haría · nosotros haríamos · ustedes harían · ellos/ellas harían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with yo en tu lugar.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out rechazar, condicional and hacer, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
