La regla · The rule
B2 gave you si + imperfecto de subjuntivo + condicional for an unreal NOW. Step each back one tense and you get the unreal PAST: si lo hubiera sabido, habría venido. If I had known, I would have come.
Y también · And also
Si lo hubiera sabido is one of the most-used sentences in Spanish — regret compressed into four words. The main clause may also take hubiera (si lo hubiera sabido, hubiera venido) — common in speech, though the condicional compuesto is the written standard.
Ojo · Watch out
si lo hubiera sabido, habría venido: pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo after si, condicional compuesto in the main clause. Never si habría sabido — si never takes the conditional. And avisar is to let someone know, not to advise.
Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with si lo hubiera sabido.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out saber, pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo and venir, condicional compuesto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
