La regla · The rule
Spanish newspapers use the conditional to report what is NOT yet confirmed: habría tres heridos — there are reportedly three injured. El ministro habría renunciado — the minister has apparently resigned. Grammars call it the condicional de rumor.
Y también · And also
Read it as a warning label: the conditional here means the writer does not vouch for it. Según and de acuerdo con do the same job in the open, and al parecer flags it in one phrase. Careful style guides ask writers to name the source instead.
Ojo · Watch out
habría tres heridos means there were REPORTEDLY three injured — read it as allegedly, not as a hypothesis. renunciar is to resign (dimitir in Spain); resignarse is to resign yourself to something.
existir, condicional — the table
yo existiría · tú existirías · él/ella/usted existiría · nosotros existiríamos · ustedes existirían · ellos/ellas existirían
ser, condicional compuesto — the table
yo habría sido · tú habrías sido · él/ella/usted habría sido · nosotros habríamos sido · ustedes habrían sido · ellos/ellas habrían sido
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with habría tres heridos.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out existir, condicional and ser, condicional compuesto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
