La regla · The rule
To have something done BY someone else: hago arreglar el carro (I am having the car fixed), mandó construir una casa, me hizo reír. Mandar + infinitive is the everyday causative; hacer + infinitive is the general one.
Y también · And also
With a reflexive it becomes what you have done to yourself: se hizo cortar el pelo, me hice hacer un traje. Hacer and its infinitive never separate: lo hago arreglar, never lo hago lo arreglar.
Ojo · Watch out
hacer and its infinitive stay together: hago arreglar el carro, with the object after both. arreglar is to fix or to tidy; reparar is the formal twin. And hizo reír a todos — the person made to laugh takes a.
mandar, presente — the table
yo mando · tú mandas · él/ella/usted manda · nosotros mandamos · ustedes mandan · ellos/ellas mandan
hacerse, presente — the table
yo me hago · tú te haces · él/ella/usted se hace · nosotros nos hacemos · ustedes se hacen · ellos/ellas se hacen
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with hago arreglar el carro.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out mandar, presente and hacerse, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
