Module 14 of the free Spanish course (CEFR C2, continued), lesson 19 of 30: Technical Spanish keeps its own words where English has borrowed: el programa (software). On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

La regla · The rule

Technical Spanish keeps its own words where English has borrowed: el programa (software), el equipo (hardware, the machine itself), la actualización (update), la copia de seguridad (backup), el ajuste (setting).

Y también · And also

Official Spanish resists anglicisms and often loses: correo electrónico is correct and mail is what people say; software and hardware are simply used, in italics. Read both, write the one your reader uses.

Ojo · Watch out

el equipo is HARDWARE — the machine — as well as the team, so read the context. la actualización is an update; the verb is actualizar. la copia de seguridad is the backup, never la salvaguarda.

ajustar, presente — the table

yo ajusto · tú ajustas · él/ella/usted ajusta · nosotros ajustamos · ustedes ajustan · ellos/ellas ajustan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el programa informático.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out ajustar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.

Keep these words

Turn this lesson’s words into flashcards, then space your reviews — the two habits the research behind our study guides backs hardest.
