La regla · The rule

Fifteen books of written practice have given you an ordered map of the language and hundreds of hours of the one thing that is hard to arrange alone: correction. Every answer you checked was checked against a printed key.

Y también · And also

What they have NOT given you is an ear, and no book can. That comes from listening and from speaking with people who will not slow down for you — and you are now equipped to start.

Ojo · Watch out

el oído entrenado is the trained ear, and no book gives it: that comes from people who will not slow down for you (frenar). equipado agrees like any participle: equipado, equipada — you are equipped for that, not finished with it.

frenar, presente — the table

yo freno · tú frenas · él/ella/usted frena · nosotros frenamos · ustedes frenan · ellos/ellas frenan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el mapa de la lengua.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out frenar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
