La regla · The rule

This is the last lesson of the last module of the last band. Fifteen books, ninety units, four hundred and fifty lessons, and a page count nobody would have believed at Module 1 of Basic — where the first thing you learned was hola.

Y también · And also

Una lengua no se termina; solamente se deja de contar. A language does not finish; you simply stop counting. Gracias por haber subido hasta aquí — thank you for climbing this far. La cima es tuya.

Ojo · Watch out

una lengua no se termina: terminarse is to come to an end, reflexive. gracias por haber subido: after gracias por, a thing done takes haber + participle. And hola is still the first word — the summit changes nothing about where a conversation starts.

subir, presente — the table

yo subo · tú subes · él/ella/usted sube · nosotros subimos · ustedes suben · ellos/ellas suben

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with una lengua no se termina.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out subir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
