La regla · The rule
From thirty-one on the pattern never changes: tens word + y + ones. Treinta y dos, cuarenta y uno, cincuenta y cinco, sesenta y nueve. Three words, always, with y in the middle.
Y también · And also
Cuarenta (40), cincuenta (50), sesenta (60): each tens word ends in -enta, and cuarenta keeps the u that cuatro has. Say your street number, your grandparents' ages, the page numbers of this book — numbers stick when they are yours.
Ojo · Watch out
The y is spoken and written from 31 up: treinta y dos, never treinta dos. Below 30 the numbers are one word: veintidós.
Do it now — on paper
Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with cuarenta.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write the numbers from 32 to 69 in Spanish in a column, say each one, then read the column back down from the bottom.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
