Numbers 70 to 100

Module 2 of the free Spanish course (CEFR A1, completed), lesson 13 of 30: Setenta (70), ochenta (80), noventa (90), the same -enta ending, the same y pattern: setenta y uno. On this page: 7 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Setenta (70), ochenta (80), noventa (90) — the same -enta ending, the same y pattern: setenta y uno, ochenta y ocho, noventa y nueve. Spanish counts to a hundred with one rule and no surprises.

Y también · And also

One hundred exactly is cien. The moment anything follows it, it grows to ciento: ciento uno, ciento veinte. This module stops at cien; the hundreds arrive later, and they follow the pattern you already know.

Ojo · Watch out

100 on its own is cien: cien pesos, cien años. It becomes ciento only when more numbers follow: ciento diez. Never ciento pesos.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with setenta.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write the numbers from 70 to 100 in Spanish in a column, say each one, then read the column back down from the bottom.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
