Sería, tendría — the conditional built

Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 12 of 30: Ser gives sería (I would be); tener gives tendría (I would have). On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Ser gives sería (I would be); tener gives tendría (I would have). The condicional uses exactly the shortened stems of the futuro: tendr-, podr-, sabr-, har-, dir- — plus -ía. If you know vendré, you know vendría.

Y también · And also

Con más tiempo, viajaría por el mundo entero — with more time, I would travel the whole world. The endings carry an accent on every form: hablaría, hablarías, hablaría, hablaríamos, hablarían.

Ojo · Watch out

The condicional stem is the futuro stem: tendré gives tendría, haré gives haría. Never teneria or haceria. And every ending carries its accent: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían.

ser, condicional — the table

yo sería · tú serías · él/ella/usted sería · nosotros seríamos · ustedes serían · ellos/ellas serían

tener, condicional — the table

yo tendría · tú tendrías · él/ella/usted tendría · nosotros tendríamos · ustedes tendrían · ellos/ellas tendrían

hablar, condicional — the table

yo hablaría · tú hablarías · él/ella/usted hablaría · nosotros hablaríamos · ustedes hablarían · ellos/ellas hablarían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with sería feliz.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out ser, condicional and tener, condicional and hablar, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
