La carta cortés — the polite letter

Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 15 of 30: The condicional writes B1's letters: Quisiera saber si… ¿Sería posible…? On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

La regla · The rule

The condicional writes B1's letters: Quisiera saber si… ¿Sería posible…? — with atentamente as the sign-off. Estimado señor / Estimada señora opens a letter to someone you do not know.

Y también · And also

Estimada señora: Quisiera saber si la piscina está abierta los domingos. ¿Sería posible reservar? Gracias de antemano. Atentamente, Leo. Three conditional moves, one perfectly polite email. In Mexico the pool is la alberca; piscina is understood everywhere.

Ojo · Watch out

estimado / estimada agrees with the reader: estimado señor, estimada señora. And atentamente closes a letter, never opens it — Spanish letters open with the greeting and a colon, not a comma.

ir, condicional — the table

yo iría · tú irías · él/ella/usted iría · nosotros iríamos · ustedes irían · ellos/ellas irían

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with quisiera saber si.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out ir, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
