Deberías — giving advice
Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 14 of 30: Advice is the conditional's day job: deberías dormir más (you should sleep more). On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.
Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.
La regla · The rule
Advice is the conditional's day job: deberías dormir más (you should sleep more), usted debería intentarlo (you should try it), podríamos salir temprano (we could leave early). Deber (must) softened by -ía is exactly should.
Y también · And also
Yo en tu lugar, me quedaría — in your place, I would stay. Yo haría lo mismo — I would do the same. Spanish advice comes as a courtesy, not a command; that softness is exactly what the condicional is for.
Ojo · Watch out
Advice in the condicional keeps its person endings: deberías (tú), debería (usted), podríamos (nosotros). And yo en tu lugar is the fixed opener — literally I in your place; no si is needed.
deber, condicional — the table
yo debería · tú deberías · él/ella/usted debería · nosotros deberíamos · ustedes deberían · ellos/ellas deberían
hacer, condicional — the table
yo haría · tú harías · él/ella/usted haría · nosotros haríamos · ustedes harían · ellos/ellas harían
Do it now — on paper
Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el consejo.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out deber, condicional and hacer, condicional in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
