Porque, por ejemplo — proving your point

Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 26 of 30: B1 does not just have opinions; it defends them. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

B1 does not just have opinions; it defends them. The toolkit: por eso (that is why), por ejemplo (for example), por un lado… por otro lado (on the one hand… on the other), la prueba (the proof), la razón (the reason).

Y también · And also

Me gusta leer. Por un lado, es tranquilo; por otro lado, se aprende mucho. Por eso leo todas las noches. Opinion, two reasons, conclusion — the whole B1 speaking task in three lines. Creer que (to think that) takes the plain indicative: creo que sí.

Ojo · Watch out

por un lado… por otro lado come as a pair — never one without the other. And creo que takes the indicative: creo que tienes razón. The subjuntivo waits for the negative, in Module 2.

creer, presente — the table

yo creo · tú crees · él/ella/usted cree · nosotros creemos · ustedes creen · ellos/ellas creen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with por ejemplo.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out creer, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
