La regla · The rule

Module 5 gave you hablaré and seré. Now the whole system: the infinitive plus -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -án. Terminaré, vendrás, saldremos. Twelve verbs shorten the stem first and keep the same endings: tendr-, pondr-, vendr-, saldr-, podr-, sabr-, querr-, habr-, har-, dir-.

Y también · And also

El año que viene terminaré mis estudios y vendré a verte. The futuro simple is the tense of plans and promises — B1 uses it everywhere, and the shortened stems are the ones you will meet most, because they belong to the commonest verbs.

Ojo · Watch out

The irregular futures shorten the stem, never the ending: vendré, podrá, saldremos. Never veniré or poderá. And every form but nosotros carries an accent mark: vendré, vendrás, vendrá, vendremos, vendrán.

poder, futuro — the table

yo podré · tú podrás · él/ella/usted podrá · nosotros podremos · ustedes podrán · ellos/ellas podrán

venir, futuro — the table

yo vendré · tú vendrás · él/ella/usted vendrá · nosotros vendremos · ustedes vendrán · ellos/ellas vendrán

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el proyecto.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out poder, futuro and venir, futuro in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
