Cuando llegue — the future after cuando

Module 6 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, first half), lesson 9 of 30: Two more shortened futures worth owning: saldré (salir) and diré (decir). On this page: 9 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Two more shortened futures worth owning: saldré (salir) and diré (decir). Same endings, short stems. Then a rule English does not have: after cuando and en cuanto pointing to the FUTURE, Spanish uses the presente de subjuntivo. Cuando llegue, te llamo.

Y también · And also

Llegue is the subjuntivo of llegar — the -ar verb takes an -e ending, the -er and -ir verbs take -a. Module 2 of this band builds the whole mood; for now learn the pattern as a fixed shape: cuando + llegue / termine / salga, then the plan.

Ojo · Watch out

After cuando pointing to the future, use the subjuntivo: cuando llegue, te llamo. English says when I arrive; Spanish never says cuando llego for a future event — that is the habit reading (whenever I arrive).

salir, futuro — the table

yo saldré · tú saldrás · él/ella/usted saldrá · nosotros saldremos · ustedes saldrán · ellos/ellas saldrán

decir, futuro — the table

yo diré · tú dirás · él/ella/usted dirá · nosotros diremos · ustedes dirán · ellos/ellas dirán

llegar, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo llegue · tú llegues · él/ella/usted llegue · nosotros lleguemos · ustedes lleguen · ellos/ellas lleguen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with saldré temprano.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out salir, futuro and decir, futuro and llegar, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
