Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

At B1 you are expected to read a short newspaper article and say what it is about — not every word of it. Three questions get you there: what happened, who is involved, and what does the writer think?

Y también · And also

Useful furniture: el titular (the headline), el periodista, según (according to), según un estudio (according to a study), la noticia (the piece of news). If a sentence defeats you, skip it and keep the thread. Leo el periódico cada mañana — I read the paper every morning.

Ojo · Watch out

según takes a noun straight after it: según él, según un estudio. Never según de. And la noticia is one piece of news; the news in general is las noticias.

resumir, presente — the table

yo resumo · tú resumes · él/ella/usted resume · nosotros resumimos · ustedes resumen · ellos/ellas resumen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el artículo.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out resumir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
