La regla · The rule
A formal Spanish letter has a shape you can learn once and use forever: Estimados señores: (with a colon), then why you are writing, then the detail, then a closing formula. The formula is longer than English and nobody shortens it.
Y también · And also
Le escribo para… opens it. Reciba un cordial saludo closes it, or the shorter atentamente. In between, one idea per paragraph. If you attach a file, say so: adjunto mi currículum — I attach my CV.
Ojo · Watch out
The greeting ends in a COLON in Spanish: Estimados señores: — never a comma. Le escribo para takes an infinitive: le escribo para solicitar. And adjunto is both the verb (I attach) and the adjective (attached).
escribir, presente — the table
yo escribo · tú escribes · él/ella/usted escribe · nosotros escribimos · ustedes escriben · ellos/ellas escriben
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with estimados señores.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out escribir, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
