La regla · The rule
Purpose is the third joint, and it repeats the rule you met with quiero que. Two different people means para que plus the subjunctive: te lo explico para que lo entiendas. One person means para plus the infinitive: te escribo para explicar.
Y también · And also
A fin de que and a fin de are the formal twins of those two, identical in grammar and one step up in register. Con el fin de is the heaviest of them, and reads as administrative. The nouns: el objetivo (the objective), el fin (the purpose), el enfoque (the approach).
Ojo · Watch out
para que and a fin de que take que + subjunctive with TWO people; para and a fin de take an infinitive with ONE: te escribo para que sepas, but escribo para saber. Never para que saber.
explicar, presente de subjuntivo — the table
yo explique · tú expliques · él/ella/usted explique · nosotros expliquemos · ustedes expliquen · ellos/ellas expliquen
entender, presente de subjuntivo — the table
yo entienda · tú entiendas · él/ella/usted entienda · nosotros entendamos · ustedes entiendan · ellos/ellas entiendan
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with a fin de.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out explicar, presente de subjuntivo and entender, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
