La regla · The rule

Aunque is one word with two meanings, and the mood is what decides. With the indicative it concedes a FACT: aunque es tarde, sigo — although it is late (and it is), I carry on. With the subjunctive it concedes a possibility: aunque sea tarde, seguiré — even if it is late.

Y también · And also

Aunque llueve, salgo: it is raining, and I go out anyway. Aunque llueva, saldré: whether or not it rains, I will go out. Same word, one letter of difference in the verb, and a different claim about the world. Choosing that letter on purpose is a B2 skill.

Ojo · Watch out

aunque + indicative is a fact (aunque llueve — it IS raining); aunque + subjunctive is a possibility (aunque llueva — even if it rains). Neither is wrong; they say different things. Pick the mood for the meaning.

ser, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo sea · tú seas · él/ella/usted sea · nosotros seamos · ustedes sean · ellos/ellas sean

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with aunque.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out ser, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
