La regla · The rule
A pesar de que (in spite of the fact that) works like aunque: indicative for a fact, subjunctive for a possibility. A pesar de que llueve, salimos. Por mucho que (however much) always takes the subjunctive: por mucho que tengas razón, no cambiaré de idea.
Y también · And also
The trap in this unit is the missing de: a pesar que is the commonest B2 slip in Spanish, and careful writers never drop the de. Say a pesar de que aloud a dozen times, with its four syllables of glue, and the family resemblance stops misleading you.
Ojo · Watch out
a pesar de que keeps its de: a pesar de que llueve, never a pesar que. por mucho que ALWAYS takes the subjunctive: por mucho que tengas razón.
tener, presente de subjuntivo — the table
yo tenga · tú tengas · él/ella/usted tenga · nosotros tengamos · ustedes tengan · ellos/ellas tengan
Do it now — on paper
Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with a pesar de que.
Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
Write out tener, presente de subjuntivo in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.
This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
