La regla · The rule

Rights at work are a normal conversation topic across the Spanish-speaking world, and the vocabulary is worth having. El derecho laboral, el sindicato (trade union), la huelga, la negociación, el despido (dismissal), el reglamento (the regulations).

Y también · And also

Reclamar is to demand as a right, and it is the verb the news uses: los trabajadores reclaman un aumento. Compare with pedir, which is merely to ask. Ellos son contratados — they are hired: the passive, third person, agreeing.

Ojo · Watch out

reclamar is to demand as a right; pedir is merely to ask. el despido is a dismissal; despedirse is to say goodbye — same root, two worlds. And el reglamento is the regulations, singular in Spanish.

contratar, voz pasiva — the table

él es contratado · ella es contratada · ellos son contratados · ellas son contratadas

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el sindicato.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out contratar, voz pasiva in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
