Numbers 13 to 31

Module 1 of the free Spanish course (CEFR A1, first half), lesson 12 of 30: Spanish builds 16 to 19 by fusing ten-and: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve. On this page: 12 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La regla · The rule

Spanish builds 16 to 19 by fusing ten-and: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve. Twenty-one to twenty-nine fuse the same way: veintiuno, veintidós.

Y también · And also

From thirty-one on, the pattern opens up: tens + y + ones — treinta y uno. With 1 to 31 you can say any date of any month, which is why this module stops there. Numbers to 100 arrive in Module 2.

Ojo · Watch out

16 to 29 are ONE word: dieciséis, veintidós. From 31 they are three: treinta y uno. And dieciséis, veintidós and veintitrés carry an accent mark.

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 12 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with trece.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write the numbers from 13 to 31 in Spanish in a column, say each one, then read the column back down from the bottom.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
