About this book

The part of math you can see — with the review built in.

Fractions are where a lot of confident young mathematicians suddenly stop feeling confident, and this book is built to slow that moment down. It starts with what a fraction IS — shaded bars and circles, dots in a set, a point on a number line — then equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering, lowest terms and mixed numbers; spends a whole stage on the easy case where the bottom numbers already match; only then asks anyone to make them match; and crosses the decimal bridge in both directions before comparing, ordering and rounding what it finds on the other side. A ladder of 82 short practice sets and 2,787 problems, with a placement check at the front so nobody starts in the wrong place.

Nothing learnt in September is gone by March. From Stage 2 on, the bottom half of every practice page revises the stages before it, so equivalent fractions are still being written while decimals are being learnt. Every rung opens with a one-line tip, and every stage with a worked example and a QR code to fresh printable practice.

Not one shape of question. Story problems once a stage, true-or-false pages built from the classic slips (1/3 + 1/3 = 2/6), a fraction OF a number, multiplying and dividing with fractions, tenths into hundredths, decimals in words and on the number line — and four puzzle breaks: equivalent fractions to match, words to crack with fraction sums, fraction pyramids and magic squares, decimal chains. The last practice page is a 25-question Ready for Grade 6? check, one question of every kind in the book.

An answer key you can trust, by construction. Every one of the 2,787 answers was computed together with its problem and independently re-checked by a separate program before printing, and the four Check Yourself pages are worked through line by line at the back. Every answer is in lowest terms — and the how-to page tells you what to say when your child writes 2/4 for 1/2, because that moment matters.
