About this book
The math you can see — forty ways to ask it, with every instrument printed true to size.
110 pages · 80 practice sets · 1,760 problems - every one with its answer in the full printed key, and the four Check Yourself pages worked through, one line of method per answer, at the back.
Geometry is the part of math a child can look at, so this book draws it: shapes to name at every turn, regular and lopsided; the triangle and quadrilateral families with their tick marks and right-angle squares; lines that are parallel, perpendicular or just crossing; lines of symmetry; the solids with their faces, edges and vertices, and the nets that fold into them. Then measuring: rulers printed TRUE TO SIZE, read in centimeters and quarter inches; the unit for the job; sensible estimates; changing units; perimeter from grids, from labels and from the missing side. Then area and volume: counting squares, multiplying instead, the L-shape, the distributive split, the same perimeter with a different area, cubes counted and length times width times height. Then angles under a drawn protractor scale, named to reflex, compared, found on a line, around a point and inside a triangle; quarter turns; and the coordinate grid.
The rule is on the page. Every set opens with its rule in one line, and three reference pages hold them all: the shapes chart with the formulas; lines, angles and the shape families with the marks a figure wears; the solids, the units and two rulers true to size. The rule for names is the most specific one - a square is a rectangle, but its name is square.
Not the same page over and over. Forty kinds of question, a code on every set naming the standard it practices, three Looking Back pages that mix the earlier stages, four Puzzle Breaks - shape riddles, crack the code by area and perimeter, the sides that give both numbers, plot the points and name the shape - and a Ready for Grade 6? page with one question of every kind.
Measuring for two countries. A page for our American friends in inches, feet, miles, pounds and gallons, and a page for our Canadian friends in centimeters, meters, kilometers, kilograms and liters - and the units page converts between them all.
An answer key you can trust, by construction. Every figure is drawn by the same program that wrote its question, and every answer was independently re-checked by a separate program before printing - the triangle re-classified from its sides, the L-shape counted cell by cell, every ruler's span re-derived from the definition of the inch. The key and the pages agree by construction, not by proofreading.
