Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

Partir (to leave) gives parti; rester (to stay) gives resté; venir gives venu. Elle est partie à huit heures. Ils sont restés à la maison.

Et aussi · And also

In the plural the participle takes -s too: ils sont venus, elles sont venues.

Attention · Watch out

In the plural the participle takes -s (ils sont venus) and the feminine plural takes -es (elles sont restées). Four spellings, one sound.

partir, passé composé — the table

il est parti · elle est partie · ils sont partis · elles sont parties

rester, passé composé — the table

il est resté · elle est restée · ils sont restés · elles sont restées

venir, passé composé — the table

il est venu · elle est venue · ils sont venus · elles sont venues

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with partir.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out partir, passé composé and rester, passé composé and venir, passé composé in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
