Je serai — the one-word future

Module 5 of the free French course (CEFR A2 mastery + the B1 bridge), lesson 16 of 30: B1's first gift, met early: the futur simple, one word. On this page: 7 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's lesson 16.

Hear the words

Each word is read twice — say it back in the gap. Computer-generated voice; credits on the course page.

La règle · The rule

B1's first gift, met early: the futur simple — one word, no aller needed. Être gives je serai (I will be); avoir gives j'aurai (I will have).

Et aussi · And also

Quand je serai grand, je serai pilote. Demain, il y aura du soleil (there will be sun).

Attention · Watch out

il y aura (there will be) is the future of il y a — one fixed form for singular and plural, like il y avait. And quand je serai grand takes the future, not the present.

être, futur simple — the table

je serai · tu seras · il/elle sera · nous serons · vous serez · ils/elles seront

avoir, futur simple — the table

je aurai · tu auras · il/elle aura · nous aurons · vous aurez · ils/elles auront

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 7 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the French spelling alone — begin with je serai.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the French.
  3. Write out être, futur simple and avoir, futur simple in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The French Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
