La regla · The rule

Written Spanish prefers nouns where spoken Spanish uses verbs. El precio subió becomes la subida del precio. Los obreros hicieron huelga becomes la huelga de los obreros.

Y también · And also

It is what makes a headline sound like a headline, and it is the single fastest way to raise the register of a sentence. Subir is the verb (subió, the pretérito); la subida is its noun. Module 1 of the Proficient band takes it apart properly.

Ojo · Watch out

Nominalization turns a verb into a noun: el precio subió becomes la subida del precio. The new noun takes an article and de: la huelga de los obreros.

subir, pretérito — the table

yo subí · tú subiste · él/ella/usted subió · nosotros subimos · ustedes subieron · ellos/ellas subieron

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with la nominalización.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out subir, pretérito in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
