La regla · The rule

A long text needs three separate passes, and doing them at once is why revision usually fails. Pass one: structure — does each paragraph earn its place? Pass two: sentences — length, repetition, connectors. Pass three: agreement and accents.

Y también · And also

Do them in that order. Correcting an accent in a paragraph you are about to delete is the commonest waste of time in any language.

Ojo · Watch out

Three passes in ORDER: structure, then sentences, then agreement and accents. Correcting an accent in a paragraph you are about to delete is the commonest waste of time. merecer takes zc: merezco.

merecer, presente — the table

yo merezco · tú mereces · él/ella/usted merece · nosotros merecemos · ustedes merecen · ellos/ellas merecen

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with la pasada.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out merecer, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
