La regla · The rule

Look back at Lesson 1. You now move across the whole register scale on purpose, hear an idiom as one word, read a sentence built the way written Spanish builds them, follow a legal or medical document, know where the two languages fail to meet, and write the three long forms.

Y también · And also

One module remains: the capstone, where all fifteen books of the ladder are put to work at once. Solo queda un peldaño — there is one rung left.

Ojo · Watch out

solo queda un peldaño: queda here is there remains, and solo means only. el peldaño is a rung or a stair; la escala is the scale you climb through — and also a stopover, which a C2 reader will meet at the airport.

quedar, presente — the table

yo quedo · tú quedas · él/ella/usted queda · nosotros quedamos · ustedes quedan · ellos/ellas quedan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with solo queda un peldaño.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out quedar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
