Advice that cares

Module 7 of the free Spanish course (CEFR B1, completed), lesson 9 of 30: Now the two units meet. On this page: 8 words with their genders and respellings, the rule, a watch-out line, the conjugation table and the audio — the study notes behind the workbook's QR.

Respellings follow the course’s say-it key; the stressed syllable is in capitals. Print this lesson’s flashcards (PDF) — the words on the front, the English and respelling on the back.

La regla · The rule

Now the two units meet. Health advice is exactly where the subjunctive earns its place: es necesario que descanses (you need to rest), quiero que tomes agua (I want you to drink water). Deber says the same as a plain must: usted debe descansar.

Y también · And also

Softer forms exist and are often kinder: deberías dormir (you should sleep) uses the condicional you already own, and te aconsejo descansar (I advise you to rest) takes a plain infinitive when the person is the same one being advised.

Ojo · Watch out

es necesario que descanses: the subjunctive after que with a named person. te aconsejo takes an infinitive (te aconsejo descansar) or que + subjunctive (te aconsejo que descanses) — both are right; never te aconsejo que descansas.

descansar, presente de subjuntivo — the table

yo descanse · tú descanses · él/ella/usted descanse · nosotros descansemos · ustedes descansen · ellos/ellas descansen

deber, presente — the table

yo debo · tú debes · él/ella/usted debe · nosotros debemos · ustedes deben · ellos/ellas deben

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 8 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with es necesario que descanses.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out descansar, presente de subjuntivo and deber, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
