La regla · The rule

Screen life has a Spanish vocabulary worth having exactly right: una red social, una pantalla, una aplicación, una contraseña, descargar (to download). Una computadora portátil is a laptop — un ordenador portátil in Spain.

Y también · And also

Note one false friend: actualmente means currently, not actually. If a text says trabaja actualmente en Lima, it is telling you about today. Actually, in the English sense, is en realidad.

Ojo · Watch out

actualmente means currently, never actually — that is en realidad. And la computadora is Latin American; Spain says el ordenador. Both are understood everywhere.

compartir, presente — the table

yo comparto · tú compartes · él/ella/usted comparte · nosotros compartimos · ustedes comparten · ellos/ellas comparten

descargar, presente — the table

yo descargo · tú descargas · él/ella/usted descarga · nosotros descargamos · ustedes descargan · ellos/ellas descargan

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with la red social.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out compartir, presente and descargar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
