La regla · The rule

The most useful question B2 teaches you to ask in any language: is this reliable? Fiable is the word. Una fuente fiable, una información verificada, un rumor sin confirmar.

Y también · And also

Verificar is to check, and desconfiar de is to be wary of: desconfía de los titulares demasiado simples. The subjunctive from Unit 3 turns up here constantly, because doubt is the subject: dudo que la fuente sea fiable.

Ojo · Watch out

desconfiar de takes de: desconfío de los rumores. fiable means reliable; fiel means faithful — a source is fiable, a friend is fiel. And peligroso is dangerous, from el peligro.

verificar, presente — the table

yo verifico · tú verificas · él/ella/usted verifica · nosotros verificamos · ustedes verifican · ellos/ellas verifican

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 10 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with fiable.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out verificar, presente in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
