La regla · The rule

A professional email in Spanish is shorter than a letter and longer than an English one. Estimada señora García: (with the colon), then the point in the first line, then one paragraph, then saludos cordiales.

Y también · And also

The closing scale is worth knowing: saludos cordiales (normal), un saludo (friendly), atentamente (formal). He escrito, he enviado — the pretérito perfecto, he plus the participle, is the tense of the email itself: le he enviado el archivo. Never open a work email with hola unless you already have.

Ojo · Watch out

saludos cordiales closes a work email; never open one with it. el asunto is the subject line, and adjunto means attached: le envío el archivo adjunto. The pretérito perfecto is he + participle: he escrito, never he escribido.

escribir, pretérito perfecto — the table

yo he escrito · tú has escrito · él/ella/usted ha escrito · nosotros hemos escrito · ustedes han escrito · ellos/ellas han escrito

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el correo electrónico.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out escribir, pretérito perfecto in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
