La regla · The rule

The B2 essay has a fixed architecture and examiners mark the architecture. Introducción, then two or three developed parts, then a conclusión that answers the question asked.

Y también · And also

Each part is the paragraph you built in Module 3: claim, reason, example, qualification. The difference at B2 is that the parts have to talk to each other — part two answers part one, not merely follows it. Ustedes deberán responder a la pregunta: you will have to answer the question, deber in the futuro.

Ojo · Watch out

el ensayo is the essay and la parte one section of it. The conclusion must ANSWER the question — a conclusion that only summarizes loses the mark for it. And responder takes a: responder a la pregunta.

deber, futuro — the table

yo deberé · tú deberás · él/ella/usted deberá · nosotros deberemos · ustedes deberán · ellos/ellas deberán

Do it now — on paper

  1. Say all 9 words aloud twice from the respelling, then once from the Spanish spelling alone — begin with el ensayo.
  2. Copy every word with its accents on paper; then cover the English column and write each meaning back from the Spanish.
  3. Write out deber, futuro in full from memory, every person, and check each form against the table above.

This free course is the reading half. The writing half — write-in lessons, daily practice pages with built-in review, self-checks and a full answer key — is the companion workbook series, The Spanish Ladder: one workbook per module, fifteen in all, released band by band with the Basic band (Modules 1–5) first.
